TYPES OF BIPOLAR
At the bipolar type 1, there are manic or mixed episodes that last at least 7 days or are so severe that the person needs immediate hospital care. Typically, the person also experiences depressive episodes, usually lasting at least 2 weeks. Symptoms of mania or depression must be a major change from the person's normal behavior.
At the bipolar type 2, there is a pattern of depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes, but without manic or mixed episodes.
Cyclothymic disorder: the patient presents periods of hypomanic symptoms, as well as periods of depressive symptoms, which must last at least two years. However, the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic episode and a depressive episode.
Unspecified bipolar: when a patient does not fit into the other established subtypes. Unspecified bipolar disorder is sometimes called subthreshold bipolar disorder. This subtype of bipolar disorder may be diagnosed when it is difficult to tell whether bipolar is the primary disorder or caused due to another medical condition, such as a substance use disorder.
