Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may be related to an imbalanced dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota. The set of microorganisms that live in a specific environment in the body is called the microbiota. Foods, bacteria, or substances found in the intestine can cause the intestine to malfunction and trigger symptoms. An imbalanced intestinal microbiota (dysbiosis) is a change in the composition and functions of the microorganisms that live in the intestine. IBS is a chronic disease where symptoms can be managed through lifestyle changes, dietary therapy, and psychological therapies. Gastrointestinal symptoms are not isolated. IBS is often accompanied by higher levels of anxiety, stress, and depression.
