SIBO

SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This occurs when bacteria that normally grow in other parts of the intestine begin to grow and migrate into the small intestine. These bacteria produce byproducts and waste products that can lead to symptoms such as large amounts of gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.

The hydrogen breath test is used to diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth syndrome.

Other tests that may indicate SIBO:

Cholesterol

• elevated levels

Phosphorus

• decreased, which may be a sign of hypochlorhydria

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is common in cases of hypochlorhydria. Proton pump inhibitors (PRAZOLs), stress, zinc, choline, and B vitamin deficiency, autoimmunity, and Helicobacter pylori infections reduce hydrochloric acid production, decrease enzyme activation, impair protein digestion, and may lead to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Adequate HCI is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 from food.

A normal stomach acid level creates a pH of 1.5 to 2.5.

Acid-blocking medications increase the stomach pH to 3.5 or higher.
