TYPES OF VEGETARIAN DIET

The individual who follows a vegetarian diet can be classified according to the consumption of animal by-products (eggs and dairy products):

• Lacto-ovo vegetarian: uses eggs, milk and dairy products in their diet.

• Lacto vegetarian: does not use eggs, but does use milk and dairy products.

• Ovo vegetarian: does not use dairy products, but does consume eggs.

• Vegetarian: does not use any animal derivatives in their diet.

• Vegan: does not use any food derived from animals in their diet, nor products or clothing containing these foods, nor any entertainment that involves animal exposure (zoos, aquariums).

It is crucial to recognize the importance of adequate vitamin B12 supplementation for vegans and vegetarians. This vitamin is essential for the formation of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, and maintenance of the central nervous system. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to a number of health problems, including megaloblastic anemia, neurological damage, and chronic fatigue.
