Vitiligo

Vitiligo involves the loss of skin pigmentation. It is believed to be an autoimmune condition. There are a number of genetic risk factors, many of which are common to the thyroid. In particular, the CTLA4 and PTPN22 genetic variations are strongly associated with Vitiligo. Optimizing vitamin D levels may be helpful.

Genes that confer susceptibility to inflammation, autoimmunity and methylation deficiency:

- Methylation: MTHFR, MTRR, MTR, CBS, SUOX, COMT, MAOA, MAOB and VDR.

- HPT axis: CAPZB, FKBP5, GPX1*, PDE8B, TG*, TSHR* (*also involved in autoimmunity)

- Autoimmune: CTLA4 and HLA.

- Inflammation: CD40, FCRL3, IL6, TNF, GC and VDR.
